Samantha R

BND, APD, RYT, INHC

Hello! I’m Sam, a nutritionist, yoga & meditation teacher and certified holistic health coach. I have a unique perspective having been obese, chronically ill, pre-diabetic and allergic or sensitive to almost everything before I discovered the power of nutrition and mind body medicine.

I believe it’s critically important to integrate alternative and traditional wisdom with conventional scientific principles to understand the etiology of illness and disease and support lasting change. I design innovative protocols focusing on bio-individuality because we are all different and what works for one person at a point in time may not work for another. For those that have had, or are interested in genetic testing, I incorporate nutrigenomics (the study of associations between genetics, nutrition and wellbeing) to understand health issues at a molecular level. This facilitates the design of a tailored plan based on your individual genetic profile to achieve rapid, sustainable results.

If you know how you want to eat but struggle to implement change, leveraging the principles of neuroscience is key. Developing supportive habits that underpin a healthy lifestyle can be simple and gentle when you understand the science behind habit formation and behavior change.

On the other side of the spectrum are people that are understandably confused about what to eat and when. From traditional modes of eating to contemporary diets, the internet and media are buzzing with promises to help you have more energy, gain muscle, lose weight and feel amazing. Keto, intermittent fasting, paleo, 80/20, biohacking, wholefoods, low carb/healthy fat, vegan, low lectin, dairy free, gluten free and the carnivore diet are just some of the eating patterns that are popular right now. How do you know which ones might benefit you and which ones might cause harm? The answer will be different for everyone and depends on your lifestyle, current health issues, nutrient status and stress levels. Managing stress levels and learning to regulate through SE work is vital when implementing lifestyle change, and science tells us that mind body practices are associated with higher levels of success and longer lasting results.

There was a challenging point in my life where I turned to yoga and meditation to find solace and that was when I discovered the power of the mind body connection. After a decade of developing my own personal practice I became a science based yoga teacher, instructing yoga in workplaces, as well as restorative, yin, vinyasa, hatha and hot yoga classes. I also incorporate Pilates, breath work, kundalini, Tai chi and QI Gong and focus on creating gentle and restorative practices to help you find stillness and peace and bring ease and lightness to your day.

I want you to believe that it is possible to achieve optimal health by making simple and complementary modifications to your lifestyle, and it doesn’t need to be complicated.

Areas of practice include: gut health, IBS and IBD (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease), autoimmune disorders, eating disorders, weight optimisation, general nutritional counselling, Type 1 & 2 diabetes, metabolic disorders, arthritis, sensitivities, and allergies and intolerances. Clinical Dietetics experience: general med/surgery, rehabilitation, malnutrition and oncology. Gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and esophageal care. Aged and palliative care.

I’ve volunteered for food relief organisations across several domains including assessing the structure and effectiveness of food banks and outreach programs, and developing meal plans, recipes and resources for low literacy clients. I’m passionate about supporting youth and I volunteer with the Empowering YOUth program to provide intensive support to long term unemployed teens and young adults with the aim of reintegration into education or the workforce. I’ve conducted primary research projects on various topics and authored a report for the Prevention and Population health branch of the South Australian Government on the impacts of outdoor food advertising on overweight and obesity in children using the INFORMAS protocol and the NOURISHING framework.

Recent specializations include protocols to eliminate excess skin using diet, exercise and collagen promoting therapies with no surgery or invasive procedures.
